Who comes first?

The same hotel. Three rankings. One question: how much does our idea of the best hotel change depending on where we look?

I checked the Hotelist, Tripadvisor and Booking top 15 lists again on 31 October 2026. The sample now contains 32 hotels. Google ratings remain as a historical reference from 9 September and are excluded from the current mean.

02 / MY TAKE

A rating and a position tell different stories.

Serras moves from second to third on Tripadvisor and stays sixth on Hotelist. It leaves the observed Booking top 15. This describes a change between searches. It does not establish a decline in the hotel experience.

La Pau: a clear match

It leads Hotelist and Booking in the lists collected. It also comes first in our combined index. Its absence from the Tripadvisor top 15 does not prove that it has no listing there.

Serras: the order matters

Tripadvisor, Hotelist and Booking place the same hotel in very different positions. To me, that gap is an invitation to look at what each platform is sorting by.

Agreement across the three lists

Only Catalonia Magdalenes appears in all three top 15 lists. Hotelist shares five hotels with Tripadvisor and five with Booking. The three-way overlap falls from two hotels to one compared with September.

03 / HOTELIST AND AI

What Hotelist adds to the conversation.

According to its own explanation, Hotelist aggregates ratings from different platforms and uses AI to read travellers’ experiences, summarise pros and cons, analyse photographs and check advertised amenities. How Hotelist describes it ↗

It also says it adjusts each source to the range of scores that source uses in practice. This differs from our arithmetic conversion from a five-point scale to a ten-point scale. I have not reconstructed or audited its algorithm here.

I want to see where that interpretation agrees with the other platforms and where it raises a question. If Hotelist incorporates signals from those platforms, the four ratings should not be treated as four entirely independent opinions.

04 / METHOD

Making the rules visible.

01. The sample

I combined the three top 15 lists and removed duplicates: 32 hotels. I preserved each search order. “Outside the top 15” is not an exact position or absence from the platform. Current ratings are collected only from the observed top 15 lists. A missing rating does not mean the platform has no rating for that hotel.

02. Mean position

I average three values, one per list, assigning 16 outside a top 15 solely for this calculation. Lower is better. La Pau leads with 6, followed by Sixtytwo with 7 and Serras with 8.33. This index rewards presence and high positions.

03. Mean rating

I multiply Tripadvisor ratings by two and average the current collected Hotelist, Tripadvisor and Booking ratings with equal weight. Historical Google ratings are excluded. Missing ratings are not filled and review counts are not weights. Coverage ranges from one to three sources. Means with different coverage need care and are not directly comparable with the previous edition.

04. Google’s role

I collect its rating as an additional reference. Sorting by Google is a calculation within this sample. Hotel search can sort by relevance and other criteria. It does not represent an official ranking of all Barcelona hotels here. Google’s criteria ↗

My conclusion. Before deciding who comes first, I need to decide what I want to measure: position, overlap or rating. This exercise describes a specific sample and search. It does not objectively identify the best or worst hotel in Barcelona.
